What is sunburn?

It is a form of radiation burn that affects living tissue such as skin that result from an over exposure to ultraviolet(UV) radiation, usually from the sun.

Sunburn is an inflammatory response in the tissue triggered by direct DNA damage by UV radiation

Sometimes, it can be red, swollen and painful. Sunburn can vary from mild to severe.

Sunburn can occur in less than 15minutes but the harm is often not immediately obvious

After exposure, skin may turn red in as little as 30minutes.

Treatments

It is important to start treatment as soon as possible to avoid skin damage due to exposure of the skin to sun.    sunburn can lead to permanent skin damage and increase the risk of skin cancer.                                                                it is best to avoid being sunburned in the first place.

Steps      

  • Drink water to help rehydrate the skin
  • Apply moisturizer e.g. aloe Vera gel , Maya Vitamin C serum or face brightening serum
  • Cool the skin
  • Do not apply mango butter, shea butter, cocoa butter etc.
  • Stay away from the sun

Preventions

  • Wear a wide brimmed hat
  • Protect the eyes with sunglasses
  • Avoid going out in the hottest part of the day.
  • Always wear sunblock and re-apply regularly.
  • Sun screens or sunblock  that are higher protects the skin from being damaged more.

SPF : Sun Protection factor 10 blocks 90% of sunburns.

UVA radiation: Does not cause sunburn, it does contribute to skin aging and an increased risk of skin cancer.
